The BRTI operates from owned premises in Avondale, Harare that provide office space for research and administration. Facilities include a brick-built main building with 7 rooms, two temporary research office blocks with 5 rooms, an open plan research hall and a separate management section, with secure premises for financial administration. Training: A separate training room can accommodate up to 40 trainees, with modern projection equipment. There is guarded parking within the premises and outside. Within the garden there are seats and tables for small discussion groups, and a small covered gazebo for larger discussion groups. The entire premises, including the Training Room, are connected to the internet via Wi-Fi and fibre-optic cable. Transport can be arranged through the Transport Manager, and the BRTI and its associated projects have access to a fleet of vehicles including a minibus, pick-up trucks, town cars and 4-wheel drive vehicles
The administration section provides human resource and financial management of projects administered through BRTI. The human resource section includes assistance in staff recruitment and management of personnel files, compliance with legal responsibilities and administration of time sheets. The financial management team provides access to bank accounts (both national and international), funds tracking, payroll management and reporting, an audit-approved system for payment for approved requests and regular reporting of financial status. Audits are conducted annually using a responsible international auditing firm. Individual projects can conduct audits at any time. The BRTI has provided finance management training to other organisations in Zimbabwe, and is regularly requested to accommodate interns to learn management skills in a practical setting. BRTI has a small apartment some 3 km from the main BRTI premises and this provides accommodation for visiting scientists.
The BRTI laboratories are in 2 different locations; a general Microbiology laboratory situated at the main BRTI main premises, number 10 Seagrave Road, Avondale Harare and the TB laboratory situated at the National Reference Laboratory, Harare hospital. Laboratory facilities include a multi-functional Biosafety category 3 TB laboratory operating in collaboration with the National Microbiology Reference Laboratory. This is in line with BRTIâ€™s mandate to do capacity building of national system. The TB lab has capacity to do microscopy, culture, drug sensitivity testing, molecular detection and immunological characterisation of TB.Â Â The laboratory is ISO 15189 certified (through SADCAS, the regional accreditation program) and undergoes quality assurance through international (US), ACTG protocols and Zimbabwe National Quality Assurance Programs. The TB laboratory provides service to research and was successfully tested on its ability to handle high volume work through processing sputum samples for the first ever National TB Prevalence Survey.
